PITTSBURG -- Washburn University jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the top of the first inning and Ichabods pitchers kept Pittsburg State University off balance at the plate to claim a 6-4 victory Sunday (Apr. 30) at Al Ortolani Field.
The win pulled Washburn (29-20, 21-12 MIAA) into a tie for third place in the MIAA standings with Pitt State (31-17, 21-12 MIAA) and gave the Ichabods tiebreaker over the Gorillas with a 2-1 head-to-head record in the weekend series. Pitt State will garner the No. 4 seed for the upcoming 2023 MIAA Postseason Tournament when the bracket is released later this evening.
Rane Pfeifer (4-2) overcame four hits, four walks and three wild pitches by registering eight strikeouts over 6.2 innings pitched for the Ichabods. Chase Torkelson recorded the final six outs for his third save of the season.
The Gorillas, who stranded eight baserunners in the contest, got a two-run double from Brevon Lee and a solo home run from Jake Grauberger. Jordan Duncan (1-2) took the loss on the mound. Boston Dowd pitched 6.1 effective relief innings, allowing just two earned runs to give Pitt State a chance to rally. Tanner Leslie and Parker Weddle also pitched scoreless innings of relief.
