Gorillas Make History in 67-63 Road Win Over No. 14 Tigers

Box Score HAYS, Kan. -- The Pittsburg State University men's basketball team held off a final minute rally by No. 14 ranked Fort Hays State University to post a 67-63 road win over the Tigers Thursday (Feb. 22) at Gross Memorial Coliseum.

The Gorillas (16-9, 12-7 M(AA) became just the 17th NCAA Division II men's basketball program to reach 1,500 all-time wins by completing the season series sweep of their intrastate rivals. Pitt State has now compiled a 1500-1316 record in 116 seasons of intercollegiate play.

Pitt State led Thursday's contest 65-56 following a three-point play by Jeramy Shaw with 1:10 to play in regulation. The Tigers (20-6, 15-5 MIAA) countered with back-to-back baskets by Elijah Nnanabu, including a 3-pointer with 47 seconds to go to trim the margin to 65-61.

Following a Pitt State turnover, FHSU got a pair of free throws from Kaleb Hammeke with 17 seconds to play to make it a 65-63 game. The Gorillas, who were victimized by 18 turnovers in the contest, turned the ball over again with 10 ticks to play. After a Tigers timeout, FHSU's Bjarni Jonsson misfired on a potential game-tying jumper and Pitt State's Tanner Mans came away with the record with one second remaining. Mans made two free throws to secure the Gorillas upset win.

R.J. Forney Jr. led all scorers with 17 points on the strength of 5-for-8 shooting from 3-point range. Max Alexander added 16 points, while Deshaun English II posted his 11th double-double of the season with 11 points and 10 rebounds. Shaw also chipped in with 13 points and eight boards.

Nnanabu led three Tigers in double figures with 15 points.

Pitt State will close out a three-game road swing with a 4 p.m. (CST) contest Saturday (Feb. 24) at Kearney, Neb., against the University of Nebraska-Kearney.
