PITTSURG -- The Fort Hays State University baseball team jumped ahead with a six-run first inning and then pulled away with a five-run eighth inning in a 13-8 victory over Pittsburg State University Friday (Apr. 26).
After a 3 hour, 12 minutes marathon outing, the Gorillas and Tigers will return to Al Ortolani Field at 11 a.m. (CDT) Saturday to wrap up the three-game MIAA series with a doubleheader.
FHSU starter Ty Riley limited Pitt State (30-16, 20-11 MIAA) to three hits through 6.0 innings of work. He issued three walks but fanned 12 batters to hold the Gorillas offense in check.
The Gorillas scored a pair of runs in the sixth frame against Riley on Dylan Kurahashi-Choy Foo and Pitt State tagged Tigers relievers Dylan Rinker and Spencer Maley for six runs in the seventh inning to knot the score at 8-8.
FHSU (25-22, 12-19 MIAA) wasted little time in countering the Gorillas with a five-run eighth. Maley (2-3) then retired Pitt State batters in order over the final two frames to lock down the victory.
Choy Foo finished the game 2-for-4 at the plate with a double, home run and four RBI. Nixon Brannan also homered and drove in three runs in the contest.
