WARRENSBURG, Mo. -- The University of Central Missouri baseball team scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to break a 5-5 tie and pull away for an eventual 8-5 victory over Pittsburg State University Saturday (Apr. 6) at Crane Stadium/Tompkins Field.
The No. 2 ranked Mules improved to 32-4 overall (20-2 MIAA) while the Gorillas dropped to 22-13 (13-9 MIAA). Pitt State and UCM will wrap up the three-game MIAA series with a 1 p.m. (CDT) game Sunday (Apr. 7).
On Saturday, the Gorillas took a 2-0 lead by scoring single runs in the first and fourth innings. Nixon Brannan knocked in the first run of the game with a sacrifice fly, while Josh Holmes doubled home Hayden Dyer in the fourth.
Pitt State starter Gage Singer held the Mules at bay for 3.1 innings. He fanned seven batters and issued just a fourth inning walk to UCM's Vance Tobol before exiting the game after 51 pitches.
Brannan also belted his 13th home run of the season, while Holmes finished with two RBI. Blake Mozley and Dylan Kurahashi-Choy Foo had two hits apiece in the game. Reliever Christian Spitz (1-1) took the loss. He allowed two runs on four hits in 1.2 innings of work.
