PITTSBURG – The Pittsburg State University women's soccer team came away victorious in its home opener at the Gorilla Soccer Pitch, claiming a 1-0 win over East Central University Thursday (Sept. 12).
The Gorillas improved to 3-0 on the young season with the win, after opening their inaugural season to play with road wins over Missouri S&T and Northwestern Oklahoma last week.
Pitt State was held scoreless in the opening half for the first time this season as East Central (1-2) registered three saves and matched the Gorillas with seven shots apiece at the half.
In the second half, a cross from McKenna Robinson found the chest of Madison Monson who - on the half volley - smashed a right footed effort into the goal, propelling the Gorillas ahead 1-0 in the 70th minute. The goal was Monson's second of the season, and Robinson registered her third assist thus far.
Goalkeepers Jocelyn Kramar and Macy Clements kept the Tigers off the board to cement the second shutout win of the season for the Gorillas. Kramar registered four saves in the first half, while Clements collected two saves and the win.
Up next, the Gorillas will travel to Bethany, Okla., to battle the Southern Nazarene University Crimson Storm Saturday (Sept. 14) at the Wanda Rhodes Soccer Complex at 6 p.m. (CDT).
