Dodson Named National Semifinalist for Campbell Trophy

IRVING, Texas — Pittsburg State senior quarterback Chad Dodson Jr. has been named a semifinalist for the William V. Campbell Trophy by the National Football Foundation (NFF) & College Hall of Fame. The award recognizes an individual as the absolute best football scholar-athlete in the nation for his combined academic success, football performance and exemplary leadership.

Dodson is one of 18 players from Division II among the 203 semifinalists nationwide. The award is open to student-athletes in Division I FBS, FCS, Division II, III and NAIA.

Dodson is a two-time All-MIAA performer with 7,329 career passing yards, 64 career touchdown passes and a 26-4 (.867) career record as the Gorillas' starting quarterback.
 
The Jacksonville, Fla., native has completed 78 of 129 passes (.605) for 1,116 yards (279.0 ypg) and eight touchdowns this fall, helping No. 10 ranked Pitt State to a 3-1 record thus far.

Dodson graduated from PSU in December 2023 with a 3.95 GPA and a bachelor's degree in biology (pre-medicine). He currently has a 4.00 GPA while pursuing a master's degree in biology. Dodson has been named to the MIAA Academic Honor Roll all four years and he garnered MIAA Scholar Athlete recognition as a sophomore in 2022 and as a junior in 2023. He also received Academic All-District honors from the College Sports Communicators (CSC) in 2023.

The NFF will announce 12-14 finalists on Oct. 23, and each of them will receive an $18,000 postgraduate scholarship as a member of the 2024 NFF National Scholar-Athlete Class Presented by Fidelity Investments. The finalists will travel to the Bellagio Hotel & Casino in Las Vegas for the 66th NFF Annual Awards Dinner Presented by Las Vegas on Dec. 10, where their accomplishments will be highlighted in front of one of the most powerful audiences in all of sports. Live during the event, one member of the class will be declared as the winner of the 35th William V. Campbell Trophy® and have his postgraduate scholarship increased to $25,000.
 
Nominated by their schools, which are limited to one nominee each, candidates for the awards must be a senior who will complete his final year of eligibility in the 2024 season or a graduate student or graduate transfer who already earned a degree and participated in the 2024 season; have a GPA of at least 3.2 on a 4.0 scale; have outstanding football ability as a first team player or significant contributor; and have demonstrated strong leadership and citizenship. The class is selected each year by the NFF Awards Committee, which is comprised of a nationally recognized group of media, College Football Hall of Famers and athletics administrators.
