Schmitt Garners MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week, Again

KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- For the second time in as many weeks, Pittsburg State University junior placekicker Austin Schmitt has been selected the MIAA Special Teams Player of the Week.

Schmitt booted three field goals, including a pair of 50+ yard kicks, to help lead the No. 12 ranked Gorillas to a 44-20 road win over Missouri Western Saturday (Oct. 18).

The Grain Valley, Mo., converted his MIAA leading 10th, 11th and 12th kicks against the Griffons. His 31-yard connection staked Pitt State to a 3-0 first quarter lead. He added a 50-yard FG on the final play of the first half to give the Gorillas a 13-7 halftime advantage, before making good on a career long 56-yard attempt for a 23-14 Pitt State lead midway through the third quarter.

Schmitt scored a game high 16 points in Pitt State's 34-10 Homecoming win over Washburn Saturday on Oct. 11 at Carnie Smith Stadium. He booted field goals of 42 and 33 yards in the contest as well as all four of his PAT tries. Schmitt also scored his first career touchdown when he rushed the ball eight yards to the end zone on a successful fake field goal attempt with 5:00 to play in the game.

He leads the conference in field goals (12) and scoring (8.5 ppg). Schmitt is the only D2 kicker with three kicks of 50+ yards this season.
