PITTSBURG — Terry Conner Jr. hit two free throws with 19 seconds remaining in regulation to help seal a 76-72 victory for Oklahoma Baptist University over the Pittsburg State University men's basketball team in the Pitt State Classic Friday (Nov. 21).
The Gorillas (4-2) led by as many as five points with 19:34 to play in the game, but the visiting Bison (4-0) battled back and led for a majority of second half play in a game that featured six ties and 16 lead changes.
OBU stretched its margin to as many as 11 points with 3:44 to go before Pitt State made a last-ditch comeback bid.
Mason English's 3-pointer drew the Gorillas within two points, 74-72, with 21 seconds remaining before Conor's game-sealing free throws two seconds later.
Connor Rogers, who scored 15 points on the night, and English, who fired in a team-leading 17 points, each missed on 3-point field goal attempts in the waning seconds.
The Gorillas shot 41.7 percent (25-60) from the field in the game, while the Bison converted 47.6 percent (30-63) of their attempts. OBU owned a 42-31 rebounding edge in the game, including a 15-10 advantage on the offensive glass.
Coner led all scorers with 26 points for the Bison.
Donald Coats (13) and
Alijah Curry (10) also scored in double figures for the Gorillas.
The Gorillas will return to action by hosting Quincy University Monday (Nov. 24) at 6 p.m. (CST) at John Lance Arena.
