Gorillas Handle Mustangs to Wrap Up Holiday Classic Action

SAN ANTONIO, Texas -- Junior Rogers scored a game-high 23 points to help lead the Pittsburg State University men's basketball team to a 66-55 victory over Midwestern State University Wednesday (Dec. 17) in day two action of the River City Holiday Classic.

The Gorillas (8-4) posted a 1-1 record in the classic format tournament after dropping a 75-68 decision to the University of Texas Permian Basin Tuesday. The Mustangs (4-6) wrapped up the tournament action with an 0-2 mark.

Pitt State led by as many as 11 points in the first half before settling for a six-point lead, 30-24, at the intermission. MWSU twice trimmed the margin to four points early in the second half, but the Gorillas used a 15-0 run to put the game out of reach. Rogers hit a 3-pointer and added a free throw to complete a four-point play to give the Gorillas a 52-33 cushion with 10:10 to play in the game.

Rogers made six of 13 shots from the floor in the game, including four of six long-range attempts. Junior forward Alijah Curry added 12 points, while redshirt junior forward Donald Coats posted eight points and a game high 10 rebounds. Freshman guard Mason English chipped in with nine points, eight rebounds and five steals.
