Softball Splits Second Day of Opening Tournament

CONROE, Texas - The Pittsburg State University softball team completed the second day of the DII First Pitch Invitational with a pair of gritty one score games at the Scrap Yard Sports Complex on Saturday (Feb. 1).

Pittsburg State (2-2) began the day with a 3-2 win over St. Mary's (Texas) (1-3) and ended the night by dropping a late 6-5 decision to Texas Woman's (4-0).

Kadyn Trochim got the Gorillas on the board in the fifth inning against STMU, tying it up 2-2 as Heather Arnett and Kendall Forbes scored from the single to center field. Amaya Snyder played hero in the seventh with a single through the left side allowing Arnett to score the game winning run.

In the circle, Ava Laurent picked up the win after six innings and three strikeouts as Aydenne Brown converted the save opportunity in the final frame.

Against TWU, the two teams used big innings to sway the game beginning in the second. The Pioneers scored three unearned runs in the top half before Pittsburg State responded with four in the bottom half to take a one run lead. In the sixth inning, Texas Woman's scored three more runs to take a 6-4 lead.

Trochim would cut the lead down to one following a single through the left side in the seventh, scoring Courtney Storey with no outs but Pittsburg State couldn't add any more runs to the late inning rally attempt.

Storey and Emily Ades led the team with two RBIs and in the circle Brown struck out seven in 3.2 innings of relief.

Up next for the Gorillas will be Midwestern State to close out the opening weekend of action at 10:00 a.m. (CST) from the Scrap Yards Sports Complex Iron Field 4.
