Short Handed Gorillas Fend Off Lions, 92-87, in Overtime

FORT SMITH, Ark. -- Grace Pyle scored a game-high 39 points to lead the Pittsburg State University women's basketball team to a 92-87 overtime win over the University of Arkansas-Fort Smith Stadium (Feb. 1).

The Gorillas (19-2, 11-0 MIAA) posted their 10th consecutive victory in escaping the Stubblefield Center with the win. UAFS dropped to 13-7 overall and 7-4 in MIAA play. Sixth-ranked Pitt State remains the only unbeaten squad in MIAA action.

The Gorillas had to fend off the Lions with a shortened roster after three players -- Karenna Gerber, Harper Schreiner and Hannah Miller -- were disqualified from the contest late in the second quarter for leaving the bench arena after a pushing and shoving incident occurred on the court near the Pitt State bench. Additionally, two more Pitt State players -- Sydney Holmes and Maycee James -- fouled out of the contest, which was mired by 49 combined personal fouls.

Clara Swearingen hit a pivotal 3-pointer in the waning seconds of regulation that gave Pitt State a brief lead and ultimately helped the Gorillas advance to overtime. Pyle took over in the extra session, scoring 12 of Pitt State's final 15 points to help seal the win.

Pyle made 11 of 25 shots from the floor, including six 3-pointers, on the afternoon. She also added 11 of 14 shooting from the free throw line. Savannah Campbell also posted a double-double in the game with 13 points and 11 rebounds. Gerber contributed 10 points and five rebounds in 14 minutes of action.

Anna Trusty scored a team-leading 20 points for UAFS. Telisha Brown, who was whistled for a technical foul that contributed to the second quarter incident, finished the game with 13 points, all coming in the second half and overtime.

Pitt State will return to John Lance Arena/Whetzel Court to host MIAA rival Emporia State University Thursday (Feb. 6) at 5:30 p.m. (CST).
