No. 27 Tigers Top Gorillas 5-4 in Series Finale

PITTSBURG -- Derek Woolwine belted a two-run go-ahead home run in the top of the seventh inning to help No. 27 ranked Fort Hays State University to a 5-4 victory over Pittsburg State University Sunday (Mar. 23) at Al Ortolani Field.

The Tigers (19-6, 14-2 MIAA) took the best two-of-three series over the Gorillas (18-7, 8-7 MIAA) with the win in the finale.

Pitt State took a 4-1 lead in to the sixth inning before FHSU plated two runs in the sixth and then took the lead on Woolwine's two-out, two-strike homer of Gorillas reliever Cadyn Castellanos (0-2). FHSU reliever Kaleb Carpenter (2-1) earned the win by limiting Pitt State to two hits and registering five strikeouts in 2.2 innings of work behind FHSU starter Trevor Baugh. Brandon Chavez logged his eighth save by securing the final six outs for the Tigers.

Drew Bugner went 3-for-4 at the plate with two RBI for the Gorillas. Alex Rodgers also went 2-for-4 with a triple and scored three times.

Pitt State will return to action Wednesday (Mar. 26) with a 3 p.m. (CDT) road match-up against Missouri Southern State University at Warren Turner Field at Joplin, Mo.
