PITTSBURG - The Pittsburg State University softball team came away with a doubleheader sweep over Nebraska - Kearney with 20 runs off 23 hits to begin the weekend on Thursday (Apr. 17) at the Pittsburg State Softball Field.
In a game one 10-3 win, three Gorillas (35-11, 16-4 MIAA) finished with multiple hits and multiple runs batted in during the contest.
Ava Laurent (15-4) picked up the win with 10 strikeouts in six innings with one earned run allowed and one walk issued.
Ava Sarwinski hit her second home run of the season in the first inning to cap off a four run first frame. Sarwinski would end the scoring in the second inning with a single to the pitcher, allowing
Kadyn Trochim to score and make it a 7-1 lead. Nebraska - Kearney (22-23, 8-12 MIAA) scored twice in the fourth before a trio of Pitt State runs in the sixth provided the 10-3 final score.
Game two of the twinbill finished at 10-1 after a six run fifth enacted the run rule.
Aydenne Brown (15-5) picked up the win with five strikeouts in four innings while
Chelsea Beville notched her third save of the season and eighth of her career.
Heather Arnett notched a game-high four RBIs in the game with a double and triple to go with a stolen base.
Sophia Driver (8) and
Trista Peterson (2) hit home runs in the contest and finished with multiple runs driven in.
Up next for the Gorillas will be Senior Day against Fort Hays State on Friday (Apr. 18) at the Pittsburg State Softball Field, beginning at Noon. The Tigers are 23-17 overall and 8-12 in the MIAA after being swept by Missouri Southern on Thursday.
