PITTSBURG -- The Washburn University baseball team scored two runs in the top of the eighth inning to rally from a 1-0 deficit and ultimately claim a 2-1 win over No. 15 Pittsburg State University in the quarterfinals of the 2025 MIAA Baseball Championship Thursday (May 8) at Al Ortolani Field.
The Ichabods (27-24) advance to the semifinals of the single elimination tournament, while the Gorillas (39-10) exit leaves Pitt State awaiting the NCAA's selection of the 2025 NCAA Division II National Tournament field Sunday night (May 11).
WU's Cooper Carlgren (3-4) pitched a complete-game gem in outdueling Pitt State's
Maddox Thornton (9-2) in a contest that took just 1 hour, 46 minutes to complete.
The Gorillas struck first when
Rickey Sanchez scored from third base on a two-out throwing error by Ichabods shortstop Jett Buck in the bottom of the seventh.
WU countered in the eighth against Thornton. Buck atoned for his throwing miscue by delivering an one-out sacrifice fly that scored Blake Scott with the tying run. Scott opened the inning with a single before Payton McHarg doubled him to third base. Cash Jay followed Buck with an RBI single to play McHarg wth the go-ahead run.
Alex Rodgers walked to open the bottom of the ninth for the Gorillas and Sanchez bunted him into scoring position, but
Drew Bugner grounded out and
Dagen Brewer flied out to left field to end the game.
