JOPLIN, Mo. — Ashlyn Alloway scored a game high 30 points to lead Missouri Southern State University to an 82-73 victory over the No. 11 ranked Pittsburg State University women's basketball team Tuesday (Jan. 6) at Robert Ellis Young Gymnasium.
The Gorillas (11-3, 4-1 MIAA) slide out of sole possession of first place in the MIAA standings and into a tie atop the league with No. 6 Fort Hays State University (13-1, 4-1 MIAA) and the Lions (10-4, 4-1 MIAA).
Pitt State was forced to play from behind for a majority of the game after leading by as many as six points, 17-11, late in the first quarter.
Marin Adams and Ja'Miya scored 19 points apiece to pace the Pitt State offense.
Harper Schreiner added 13 points, eight rebounds and five assists, while
Kaycee McCumber fiidhed with seven points and seven rebounds.
The Gorillas got as close as one point of the Lions, at 61-60, on a layup by McCumber with 4:49 to play, but MSSU rattled off eight straight points to regain control of the contest.
The Lions outscored the Gorillas by 11 points, 26-15, at the free throw line in the contest. MSSU converted 26 of 28 charity shots compared to 15 of 23 shooting by Pitt State.
The Gorillas, who wrapped up a three-game road swing with the loss, will return to the friendly confines of John Lance Arena to host Newman University Thursday (Jan. 8) at 5:30 p.m. (CST).
