No. 11 Gorillas Soar Past Jets, 95-66

PITTSBURG — Freshman guard Cambrie Phillips scored a career best 19 points to lead the No. 11 ranked Pittsburg State University women's basketball team to a 95-66 win over Newman University Thursday (Jan. 8) at John Lance Arena.

The Gorillas improved to 12-3 overall (5-1 MIAA), while the visiting Jets slipped to 7-7 overall and 1-4 in conference play.

Senior guard Harper Schreiner filled the stat sheet with 14 points, six rebounds and six assists. She became the 27th player in the history of the Gorilla women's basketball program to reach 1,000 points with her final basket with 4:51 to play in the game. She exited the contest with 1,001 points in 115 career games for Pitt State.

The Gorillas led just 17-16 after 10 minutes of play, but Pitt State exploded for 26 second-quarter points to take a 42-29 advantage to the break. The Gorillas shot 50 percent from the field in the game, making 33 of 66 attempts including 12 of 19 (.632) from distance. Phillips, who made seven of 12 shots overall, knocked down five triples in the contest.

Junior center Amanda Byrnes matched her career best scoring performance with 15 points, while freshman guard Marin Adams (10) and redshirt sophomore guard Hannah Miller (10) also reached double figure scoring. Freshman center Kaycee McCumber chipped in with nine points and eight rebounds.

Newman junior forward Jaeden McMillen led all scorers with 22 points, while junior guard Alexis Martin added 16 points.

The Gorillas will travel to Claremore, Okla., next Wednesday (Jan. 14) to face MIAA rival Rogers State University.
