PITTSBURG - The Pittsburg State University women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 shutout win over the Missouri Western State University Griffons, Sunday (Nov. 1) at the Gorilla Soccer Pitch to advance to the MIAA Tournament Semifinals.
For the Gorillas (14-0-5) this marks the first postseason win in program history and improves the program record in the MIAA Tournament to 1-1-0.
Livi Jones for the third time this season scored a game winner, this time from a
Sarah Peyton Webb free kick cross that found Jones in the middle of the 18-yard box. Jones claimed the floated cross with her right foot in the air and beat a diving Morgan Byrd at 21:05.Â
Following the goal, Missouri Western (8-4-7) turned up the intensity and fought to find an equalizer but
Jocelyn Kramar and the defensive unit for Pitt State held firm and repelled nine shots, five of which forced Kramar to record saves in the match.
Abby Hoffman finished as the Gorillas leader for shots in the match with three and alongside Jones accounted for all four shots on goal for PSU. Kendall Knisley for MWSU recorded a match-high four shots with three forcing saves while putting in a full 90 minute performance. Byrd notched three saves while Kramar claimed a match-high five saves.
Up next will be the MIAA Tournament Semifinals against the second seeded and No. 20 University of Central Missouri Jennies on Friday (Nov. 6) at the Stryker Soccer Complex in Wichita, Kan. The two teams battled to a dramatic 1-1 tie on the Oct. 25 with
Sammie Edwards goal at 89:21 helping to accomplish the undefeated regular season for the Gorillas.
