BRANSON, Mo. - The Pittsburg State University softball team picked up wins 10 and 11 on the season, setting a new program record for best start to a season in the process on Thursday (Feb. 12).
Pittsburg State (11-0) eclipsed the 10-0 starts that the 1977 and 1979 teams were able to accomplish with an 11-2 win over the University of Missouri - St. Louis in the morning and a 3-2 victory over Southern Nazarene University in the evening.
Againat UMSL (3-3) the Gorillas jumped out to a 5-2 advantage after the first three innings before adding runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth to provide the 10-3 final score.
Kyleigh Lamont belted her second home run of the season and finished the game with three RBI while being one of five members of the team to collect multiple hits.
Alleyna Rushing and
Lexi Davis scored twice in the game with Davis collecting a pair of doubles and Rushing a pair of stolen bases.
Lexi Franklin (3-0) got the win after 5.1 innings with four strikeouts as
Emma Crabb finished the game with three strikeouts in 1.2 innings of work.
To end the day against SNU (3-6), Pitt State got on the board in the first inning from
Haili Igou's second home run of the season to make it 2-0 early.
Ava Laurent (3-0) had her no-hit bid broken up in the fifth on a two-run home run to tie it up heading to the bottom half of the inning.
Heather Arnett got on base with a single and stole second before a
Kadyn Trochim RBI double scored her and put the Gorillas up 3-2, a lead that PSU would not relinquish. Laurent got the win, her 38th of her career with a complete game three-hit outing.
Up next for Pittsburg State will be the final day of the Branson D2 Battle Tournament on Friday (Feb. 13). First pitch from Famous Dave's Field against Christian Brothers University is set for 11:00 a.m. (CST), with the Gorillas finishing up the weekend action against Arkansas Tech University approximately 30 minutes following the conclusion of the CBU game.
