TOPEKA, Kan. – The Pittsburg State University women's basketball team fell on the road 71-56 against the Washburn University Ichabods on Wednesday (Feb. 25) at Lee Arena.
For the Gorillas (18-9, 11-7 MIAA)
Clara Swearingen led the team with 11 points as
Marin Adams and
Ja'Miya Brown both finished with 10 points. Brown,
Harper Schreiner,
Kaycee McCumber and
Cambrie Phillips tied for the team lead with four rebounds. As a team, Pitt State shot .500 from behind the arc (9-of-18) but .327 from the field and .684 from the free throw line.
Washburn (20-7, 13-5 MIAA) got a team-high 11 points from Aniah Wayne off the bench while Gabi Giovannetti, Brooke Gomez and Britany Kogbara each finished with 10 points. Giovannetti and Yiibari Nwidadah each finished with a game-high seven rebounds.
Pittsburg State held a 35-29 lead at the half before a 22-2 third quarter by WU spoiled the early lead. The Gorillas got as close as seven (55-48) with 5:32 remaining in the fourth quarter following a McCumber made free throw, but the Ichabods closed out the quarter with a 16-8 advantage over the final minutes of the game to claim a 71-56 home victory.
Up next for the Gorillas will be the regular season finale against the University of Central Missouri Jennies, with UCM claiming a share of the MIAA regular season crown today with their win over Missouri Southern State University. Tip off against UCM from the Jerry M. Hughes Athletics Center is set for 1:00 p.m. (CST) on Saturday (Feb. 28).
