EMPORIA, Kan. - The Pittsburg State University women's basketball team fell in a close road conference game against the Emporia State University Lady Hornets, 65-63 at W.L. White Auditorium following a buzzer beating three pointer from ESU on Saturday (Feb. 5).
For the Gorillas (16-5, 9-3 MIAA),
Kaycee McCumber collected her seventh double-double of the season with 13 points and a game-high 16 rebounds.
Marin Adams finished with 13 points, eight rebounds and a team-high three steals.
Harper Schreiner and
Cambrie Phillips both came away with 10 points.
Emporia State (12-10, 6-7 MIAA) was led by Vanessa Coleman with a game-high 22 points, including the buzzer beating three pointer. Kaitlyn Sanders off the bench finished with 14 points and sharpshooter Gracie Gilpin came away with 13 points.
At the half it was a three point lead for Pittsburg State, 36-33 with the Gorillas holding a 26-16 advantage on points in the paint in the first 20 minutes of action. The Lady Hornets were able to at the end of the third quarter tie it up 47-47 with a 6-2 run to close the quarter. Neither team in the fourth quarter was able to get a lead larger than four, with four ties and four lead changes dictating the final quarter.
Down 62-60 with 23.2 seconds left the Gorillas collected a defensive rebound and advanced to the front court before calling a timeout, coming out of the timeout, Pitt State was able to draw a foul with 10.5 seconds remaining and attempt a pair of free throws. The Gorillas made the first free throw before missing the second attempt,
Cambrie Phillips was able to corral the rebound and call a timeout with 7.8 seconds remaining. On the ensuing possession, Phillips sank a free throw line pull up jumper with 2.4 remaining to give the Gorillas a 63-62 lead.
Emporia State called a timeout to advance the ball into the front court and after having some trouble attempting to inbound the ball called a timeout to regroup. On the second attempt to inbound the Lady Hornets were able to get it to Vanessa Coleman who converted on a contested three pointer to beat the buzzer.
Up next for Pittsburg State will be the Newman University Jets on Saturday (Feb. 7) at Fugate Gymnasium with a 1:30 p.m. (CST) start time.
