PITTSBURG - The Pittsburg State University softball team picked up wins, 23 and 24 on the season after sweeping the University of Sioux Falls Cougars on Friday (Mar. 13) in the first day of action for the MIAA/NSIC Conference Challenge at the Pittsburg State Softball Field.
Pittsburg State (24-1) claimed game one, 4-1, before achieving a 9-0 run rule win in five innings to end the doubleheader against USF (12-11).
Sailor Hall collected her eight home run of the season to cap off the four run first inning for PSU, finishing in a tie with
Lexi Davis for the game lead with a pair of runs driven in. In the circle,
Ava Laurent (8-1) got the win with four shutout innings as
Emma Crabb picked up her first save of the season with 3.0 innings of work.
In game two, Hall got the start in the circle and picked up her fourth win of the season with 4.1 innings of shutout ball while coming away with a season-high six strikeouts.
Lexi Franklin came in for the final two outs for her first save of the season.
Heather Arnett finished the game 3-of-4 with five RBI, and was responsible for the run rule activating grand slam in the fifth. All six runs scored by Pittsburg State in the fifth came with two outs with a pair of home runs responsible for every run.
Up next for the Gorillas will be a 10:00 a.m. (CDT) start of a scheduled doubleheader against the St. Cloud State University Huskies on Saturday (Mar. 14) at the Pittsburg State Softball Field to conclude the MIAA/NSIC Conference Challenge.
Note: Heather Arnett set a new Pittsburg State and MIAA record for consecutive games with a hit, with Arnetts streak beginning on May 8, 2025. Arnett has now recorded a hit in 27 straight games following action on Friday (Mar. 13). Taylor Lambert from Feb. 9 - Mar. 14, 2022 held the previous record school and conference record with a hit in 25 consecutive games.
