No. 1/4 Gorillas Take Series from No. 7/6 Mules

PITTSBURG – The Pittsburg State University baseball team erased an early 5-0 deficit from the University of Central Missouri and score an 8-5 victory Saturday (Mar. 14) in game one of an MIAA doubleheader at Al Ortolan Field.

The win, coupled with a 13-4 victory over UCM Friday, gave the Gorillas their first regular series victory over the Mules since 2013. UCM salvaged a 14-5 win over Pitt State in the series finale later Saturday.

The Gorillas, ranked No. 1 nationally by the baseball writers and No. 4 by the D2 coaches, exited the series 22-2 overall and 12-2 in MIAA play. The No. 6/7 Mules wrapped play at 19-5 (10-3 MIAA).

UCM jumped out to a 5-0 lead in game one after 4.5 innings of play. The Mules plated two runs each in the first and third innings and added a fifth run in the top of the fifth, before the Gorillas responded with a solo home run by Landin Midgett and a two-run shot by Cole Carter in the bottom of the frame to make it a 5-3 contest.

Pitt State punctuated the rally with a five-run seventh inning. Eric Bacon delivered a two-run single to give the Gorillas a 6-5 edge and Dagen Brewer capped the big inning with a two-run blast for his ninth home run of the season.

Elijah Seitz (4-0), the third of four Pitt State pitchers used in the contest, limited the Mules to one hit in 1.2 innings of work to pick up his fourth win of the season. Cooper Crouch nailed down his third save by closing the final six outs of the game.

In the series finale, UCM broke open a 2-2 game with a five-run second inning. After Pitt State clawed back to an 8-4 contest, the Mules popped four run in the sixth and single runs in the seventh and eighth frames.

Bacon, Brewer, Midgett and Brett Sarwinski each had doubles in the contest. Landon Bruce had a pair of hits in the ball game, including a solo homer in the fourth inning.

The last time the Gorillas captured a three-game series win over the Mules, the two teams had to meet in Hays, Kan., due to wide-spread rain across the region to play a regular season series May 4-5, 2013. Pitt State posted 11-3 and 9-7 wins with a 16-4 UCM victory sandwiched in-between.

The Gorillas will return to action Tuesday (Mar. 17) by hosting Drury University in a non-conference match-up at 3 p.m. (CDT) at Al Ortolani Field.
