PITTSBURG --
Dagen Brewer smacked a solo home run in the bottom of the first inning and
Isaac Webb belted a grand slam in the third inning to help power the Pittsburg State University baseball team to a 10-3 win over Missouri Southern State University Tuesday (Apr. 21) at Al Ortolani Field.
Webb's round tripper staked Pitt State (34-8, 21-8 MIAA) to a 5-1 lead and the Gorillas tacked on five more runs in the bottom of the fourth inning after MSSU (29-14, 24-9 MIAA) trimmed the margin to 5-3 in the top of the frame.
Three Pitt State relievers -
Porter Starnes,
Preston Giltner and
Cason Long - combined to hold the Lions scoreless over the final 5.1 innings of work. Starnes (1-0) picked up his first win of the season with 1.1 innings of work. Giltner and Long combined to register five strikeouts over the game's final 4.0 innings.
Webb collected three of Pitt State's nine hits in the game. Brewer was intentionally walked three times following his first-inning homer. He broke the Gorillas' single season record with his 46th walk of the season in his final at-bat in the eighth inning.
Grant Nottlemann also drove in a pair of runs on the afternoon.
Pitt State will open a three-game MIAA series against No. 7 Rogers State University beginning Friday (Apr. 24).
