PITTSBURG - Junior pitcher
Emma Crabb recorded the second perfect game in Pittsburg State University softball history on Saturday (Apr. 25) against the Newman University Jets at the Pittsburg State Softball Field.
Crabb (15-2) is the first Gorilla to pitch a perfect game since Renee Dunlap (Mar. 26, 1995) accomplished the feat against Missouri S&T in Rolla, Mo. The Mountain Home, Ark., native finished with three strikeouts, 11 fly outs and a ground out in the five inning run rule victory for the Gorillas (45-4, 17-3 MIAA) to begin the conference doubleheader against Newman (10-40, 4-18 MIAA).
Pittsburg State scored three runs in the first inning off a pair of home runs from seniors
Kadyn Trochim and
Lexi Davis. In the second inning, a
Haili Igou two run double and Trochim RBI double made it 6-0.
Trista Peterson hit a two run home run in the third before a two RBI double from Davis and a two RBI single from
Kyleigh Lamont made it 12-0. Putting the finishing touches on the game, Trochim singled home
Rachael Schlotter before Davis scored Trochim and
Heather Arnett with a double to left center, making it 15-0.
Davis for game one went 3-of-3 with five runs driven in, Trochim, 4-of-4 with four RBI and three runs scored and Arnett finished 3-of-4 with three runs scored to set an MIAA record for season runs scored with 75.
Game two would see the Gorillas pick up a 7-3 win to conclude Senior Day. Davis got the scoring started in the first with a triple scoring Trochim for an early 1-0 lead. Newman responded with the first run of the day from a bases loaded walk to even it up 1-1. Davis in her next at bat hit a two run home run to left field to score Igou and make it 3-1 in the third inning. Igou in the fourth platted Schlotter to make it 4-1. In the fifth, Arnett singled home
Alleyna Rushing, Igou singled in a pinch running
Lauren Turner and a Trochim fielders choice scored Schlotter to make it 7-1. The Jets mounted a comeback in the sixth with a pair of runs but couldn't muster up anything afterwards.
Davis led the team with three RBI, going 2-of-2 in the second game. Igou led the team with three hits and was one of five Gorillas to finish with multiple hits.
Lexi Franklin (13-1) pitched a complete game effort, throwing 129 pitches and striking out one hitter while inducing 11 fly outs and eight ground outs.
Up next for Pittsburg State will be a makeup game against the Missouri Western State University Griffons on Tuesday (Apr. 28) in St. Joseph, Mo. First pitch from the Griffon Softball Field is set for 4:00 p.m. (CDT).
