TOPEKA -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team clinched a share of its first-ever MIAA Regular Season Championship with a 16-4 run-rule victory over Washburn University Friday (May 1).
The Gorillas (40-8, 27-8 MIAA) also secured the program's second ever 40-win season by beating the Ichabods (20-29, 16-19 MIAA).
Pitt State overcame an early 2-0 deficit in the first inning by plating three runs in the second and five more run in the third frame. The Gorillas put the game out of reach with an eight-run sixth inning.
Jadyn McNealy smacked a two-run single in the second inning and a run scoring single in the third inning among his three hits.
Cooper Wesslund,
Andrew Branson and
Landon Bruce also enjoyed three-hit games. Branson delivered a solo home run in the sixth-inning scoring outburst, while
Seth Dandridge doubled, tripled and drove in three runs.
Zach Voss (10-2) became the fifth player in Pitt State history to reach 10 wins in a season. He allowed four runs and six hits in 5.0 innings of work.
Ryan Leiker and
Cooper Crouch tossed scoreless innings behind Voss in the win.
The Gorillas and Ichabods will wrap up the three-game series and regular season play with a 1 p.m. (CDT) game Saturday at Falley Field at Steve Anson Park.
