PITTSBURG - The Pittsburg State University softball team fell at home to begin the NCAA Division II Central Regional on Thursday (May 14) at the Pittsburg State Softball Field, 9-4 against the Rogers State University Hillcats.
RSU (37-19) claimed the win with four home runs to power the opening game win. Pittsburg State (45-10) got out to an early lead but stranded eight runners and struck out 10 times in the defeat.
In the first inning, Pitt State got on the board with a
Sailor Hall RBI single up the middle scored
Heather Arnett.
Kadyn Trochim in the second inning singled down the right field line to score
Rachael Schlotter with Arnett scoring off a throwing error by the right fielder to make it 3-0. In the third inning, Raelle Gorman hit a two-run home run before a Jaden Jordan solo shot even it up 3-3. Gorman in the fifth hit a go ahead solo home run before five runs were scored in the sixth to open up the game. In the seventh inning,
Lexi Davis singled home
Haili Igou but the Gorillas were unable to add any more runs.
Arnett, Igou and Trochim each finished with two hits in the game with the lead off hitter, Arnett scoring twice.
Ava Laurent (9-3) struck out three in 4.0 innings in the loss and
Emma Crabb pitched the final 3.0 innings.
On Friday (May 15) the Gorillas will play against Winona State in an elimination game at 1:30 p.m. (CDT) at the Pittsburg State Softball Field. The winner of the PSU vs. WSU game will then play in another elimination game at approximately 4:00 p.m. against the loser of the Rogers State vs. Central Oklahoma game to begin the day.
