PITTSBURG - The Pittsburg State University softball team fell at home, 13-2 and 3-2 on Saturday (May 2) at the Pittsburg State Softball Field against the Missouri Southern State University Lions.
MSSU (45-7, 20-4 MIAA) is ranked No. 11 in the latest NFCA Division II Top 25 Poll, claimed the MIAA regular season title for the first time since 2001. Pittsburg State (45-8, 17-7 MIAA), the No. 4 team in the NFCA poll, ended the regular season with a third place finish in the MIAA standings.Â
In game one,
Lexi Davis got the scoring started in the first inning with a two run homer run for her 13th home run of the season and pushed her season RBI tally up to 75. Davis in the process set a new PSU season record for runs batted in, passing Tiffany Brown's 2014 total of 74 where she finished with an MIAA season record with 27 home runs. For the game, Davis and
Haili Igou accounted for the hits.Â
For game two, MSSUÂ got on the board in the first inning to take an early lead before back-to-back solo home runs from Igou and
Kadyn Trochim gave the Gorillas a 2-1 lead after three innings. Missouri Southern scored a tying run in the fifth before scoring the game winning run in the seventh. Igou, Trochim and
Trista Peterson finished with a hit in the game.
Emma Crabb (15-3) struck out three in a complete game in the circle.
Pittsburg State will find out who its quarterfinal opponent for Thursday (May 7) is in the MIAA Championship in Emporia, Kan., later on tonight. Action from the Trusler Sports Complex will begin on Wednesday (May 6) and end with a championship game on Saturday (May 9).
