PITTSBURG - The Pittsburg State University women's soccer team picked up a 1-0 gritty shutout victory over the Washburn University Ichabods on Sunday (Sept. 20) at the Gorilla Soccer Pitch.
For the Gorillas (8-0, 2-0 MIAA) the win over WU (5-1-1, 1-1-0 MIAA) marks the first victory over the Ichabods in the programs short history. Among schools that Pitt State has played multiple times, Nebraska - Kearney is the only program that is yet to be defeated by the Gorillas (0-0-2).Â
Livi Jones claimed the match winner at 28:56 with a shot within the six-yard box that evaded a nearby Lili Everley, following a failed clearance attempt from a corner kick from PSU. Jones almost opened the scoring up at 22:09 with her headed effort off a corner kick being cleared near the goal line by Mackinly Rohn. For the match, Pitt State held a slim 8-7 advantage over the Ichabods for shots, 4-2 for shots on goal and 4-3 on corner kicks.
With 30:37 left in the match, a near three hour lightning delay almost proved to be a turning point. WU came out and fired off all seven shots of the match after the delay but
Jocelyn Kramar and the defensive unit for the Gorillas held firm to preserve the shutout. Kramar finished the match with two saves, Jones led the match with two shots on goal while
Abby Hoffman and
Shayla Hunt tied for the team lead for shots in the game for PSU.
Up next for Pittsburg State will be a road weekend in Oklahoma. Northeastern State in Tahlequah, Okla., will host the Gorillas on Friday (Sept. 25) at 7:00 p.m. (CT) from DeLoache Field. Central Oklahoma will end the weekend on Sunday (Sept. 27) against PSU at 1:00 p.m., on Tom Thompson Field.
