PITTSBURG — For the second time this season, Pittsburg State University has sold out all available tickets and distributed all available seats to PSU students at the venue prior to game day.
There will be no walk-up tickets available at Brandenburg Field/Carnie Smith Stadium Saturday (Oct. 20) when the box office opens at 12 Noon (CDT) for the Gorillas’ Homecoming match-up against MIAA rival Missouri Western State University. The only tickets still to be distributed Saturday will be those reserved by PSU players for their families/guests, as well as those purchased in advance for “will call” pick-up. Pitt State officials anticipate Saturday’s game to break the school’s all-time attendance record of 11,862 fans set on the Oct. 13, 2001 Homecoming game against Northwest Missouri State University.
“Gorilla Nation has come out in force all season long to support our football team,” PSU athletic director Jim Johnson said. “This will truly be a fitting weekend to establish what we think will become a new attendance record on Homecoming weekend in a game with significant bearing on the MIAA Championship and NCAA postseason races.”
Pitt State enters Saturday’s action 5-1 overall, 5-1 in the MIAA and ranked No. 7 in the most recent AFCA/Division II Top 25 poll, while Western comes in at 6-1 overall, 5-1 in the MIAA and ranked No. 16 in the AFCA/Division II Top 25 poll.
The Gorillas, the defending NCAA Division II National Championship, surrendered their No. 1 ranking and unbeaten season with a hard-fought 31-21 loss to No. 7 Northwest Missouri State in The Fall Classic at Arrowhead XI at Kansas City, Mo., last weekend.
The Griffons, ranked No. 4 at the time, dropped a 31-30 decision to MIAA rival Missouri Southern at St. Joseph, Mo., last Saturday to lose their unbeaten season.
Pitt State played before the second-largest crowd in Brandenburg Field/Carnie Smith Stadium history – 10,754 fans – in its home opener against Central Oklahoma on Sept. 8. The Gorillas then played before a crowd of 10,779 fans on Family Day against Lincoln on Sept. 22. Pitt State has averaged 10,127 fans in its first three home games in 2012 – 127 percent capacity of the 7,950 seat facility.
