Pittsburg State will play each of its next three games on the road, beginning with a single game this week against Northeastern State in Tahlequah. The team has a bye in the league schedule on Saturday.

Scouting Northeastern State

Northeastern State is 11-5 overall and 6-2 in MIAA play.  The Riverhawks are on a three-game win streak with wins over Southwest Baptist, Central Oklahoma and No. 9 Washburn. The team has won seven of its last eight games.

The Riverhawks have not allowed its opponents more than 60 points in 13 of 16 games on the season  and not more than 50 in six games. The team averages 62.8 ppg and holds opponents to 53.2. Opponents get the rebounding edge 36.0 to 35.2. NSU is shooting .417 overall and .366 from three-point range. They hold opponents to a .351 overall percentage and .304 from beyond the arc.

Taylor Lewis is the team’s leading scorer and the second leading scorer in the MIAA with 16.1 ppg. She is the team’s leading three-point shooter, having made 51-of-121 threes (.421) on the season. She leads the MIAA in threes made on the year. Tosha Tyler also scores in double figures for the Riverhawks with 11.1 ppg. She leads the team in steals with 19 and is the second leading three-point shotter with 31 threes made and a .388 three-point shooting percentage. No NSU players average five or more rebounds per game. Sarah Green in the leading rebounder with 4.9 rpg. Carrington Fox chips in 4.8 rpg and Katy Harsen adds 4.3. Green leads the team in assists with 41 and Fox is the leading shot blocker with 22 rejections on the year.  

Scouting Pittsburg State

PItt State is now 12-4 overall and 6-2 in MIAA play. The team’s losses came at the hands of William Jewell, Central Oklahoma, Academy of Art and most recently Central Missouri. The Gorillas are tied for second in the league with Truman and Northeastern State.

Pitt State is hitting 44.3 percent of its shots from the floor, while holding opponents to a 35.4 percent shooting percentage. The team’s shotting percentage is second in the MIAA and 14th in the country. Pitt State has held five of its last seven opponents to under 60 points. The team is outscoring opponents by 12.8 points per game, 70.9 to 58.1. The Gorillas are also tough on the glass, outrebounding their foes 40.7 to 35.2. Pitt State shoots .322 from three point range and .726 from the charity stripe.

Pitt State has only one player scoring in double figures, as Lizzy Jeronimus scores nearly 20 points per game at 19.1 ppg. Hher scoring average leads the MIAA and is 18th in the nation. Jeronimus also leads Pitt State in assists with 40 and is the second-leading rebounder with 6.4 rpg. Morgan Westhoff comes off the bench to score 9.4 ppg as the Gorillas’ second leading scorer. Westhoff is the team’s top three-point shooter, as she has made 31 of 69 threes on the year for a .449 shooting percentage from  long range, which is the third-best three-point shooting percentage in the MIAA. Lauren Brown leads the team in rebounds with 8.6 rpg after setting the school record with 22 rebounds against Northwest Missouri. Brown also leads the team in blocked shots with 30. Freshman Kylie Gafford is just behind her with 22 blocks on the year. Drew Roberts is the team’s third-leading scorer with 7.1 points per game.

PSU vs. Northeastern State

The all-time series with Northeastern State is knotted at 10-10 after three meetings last season. The Gorillas lead the series in Pittsburg 7-4 and at neutral sites, 2-1, but the Riverhawks lead in Tahlequah 5-1. The longest streak of wins in the series was six by the Northeastern from Jan. 4, 1985 to Nov. 25,1988. Pitt State’s longest string of wins has been four from Dec. 18, 1991 to Dec. 6, 1996.

The most points scored by either team in a game has been 79 twice by Pitt State in a 79-76 win in Pittsburg on Dec. 18, 1993 and a 79-62 win in Bolivar, Mo. on Dec. 6, 1996. The largest margin of victory in the series was 23 (71-48) points by PSU in the Jan. 7, 1984 meeting in Pittsburg. NSU’s largest margin of victory has been 22 points on Jan. 10, 1987. The team’s met up three times last season. Each team won on its home court, but the Gorillas won the most important game of the season, a 68-54 victory in the NCAA Regional in Topeka.
