PITTSBURG — Quarterback Tony Abenoja tossed touchdown passes of 40 and 76 yards to wide receiver John Brown on seventh-ranked Pittsburg State University's first two offensive plays to lead the Gorillas to a lopsided 70-0 win over Northwestern Oklahoma State University Saturday (Nov. 2).
 
Abenoja completed 10 of 12 passes for 256 yards and four touchdowns in just one half of action as Pitt State (8-1) built a 56-0 halftime cushion before 8,467 fans at Brandenburg Field/Carnie Smith Stadium.
 
Brown, who climbed into eighth place in MIAA history in career receiving yards, finished the game with four catches for 132 yards. He now has 174 receptions for 3136 yards.
 
Jeff Seybold, Jr. also carried the ball 10 times for 125 yards and three touchdowns against the Rangers, scoring on runs of two and nine yards in the first quarter as well as a five-yard run in the second period.
 
In all, Pitt State compiled 634 yards of total offense in the contest – 360 yards on the ground and 274 yards through the air.
 
Brian Poston rushed six times for 89 yards, including a 52-yard third quarter scoring run. Backup quarterbacks Ramsey Hamilton and Darrack Harger both added touchdown runs – Harger from six yards out late in the first half and Hamilton on a 23-yard scamper in the third period.
 
Gavin Lutman and Conner Combes added scoring catches from Abenoja in Pitt State's 28-point second quarter.
 
The Pitt State defense limited NWOSU (1-8) to 128 total yards in the game, registering the squad's first shutout since blanking Emporia State, 62-0, on Nov. 10, 2007.
 
The Gorillas forced five turnovers in the contest – with interceptions by Aries Herrion and Dylan Case and fumble recoveries by Spencer Brown, Taye Irvin and Blake Woellhof.
 
Tyler Disney made a team-leading six tackles with a forced fumble. Joe Uzzel made two tackles-for-loss with a quarterback sack and a forced fumble among his three total tackles.
 
The Gorillas will travel to St. Charles, Mo., next Saturday (Nov. 9) to face MIAA rival Lindenwood University at 2:37 p.m. (CST) with the game slated to broadcast on the MIAA TV Network.
