PITTSBURG — Evan Thomas went 5-for-5 with a triple, a home run and three RBIs to lead Pittsburg State to an 18-1 season-opening victory over Maryville (Mo.) Saturday (Feb. 16) at Al Ortolani Field.

The win gave the Gorillas (1-0) a successful debut for first-year head coach Matt Murray.

Matt Stalcup allowed just one hit and registered six strikeouts in four innings of work on the mound for Pitt State. George Brandecker allowed one run in three innings of relief work, while Ryan McKay worked the eighth and James Fitzgearlds pitched the ninth.

Brad Foss also collected four hits in the game for Pitt State, while Austin Lastimado batted 3-for-4 with a double and two runs scored. Ryan Bilovesky belted a grandslam in the Gorillas nine-run seventh inning.

The Gorillas and Saints (0-3) will wrap up the series with a 1 p.m. game Sunday (Feb. 17).
