TAHLEQUAH, Okla. — The Pittsburg State baseball team split a pair of games against Northeastern State Thursday (Feb. 28), the Gorillas opening action in MIAA play. Pitt State claimed a tidy 2-1 victory in the opener, then rallied from a 9-0 deficit to take a lead into the eighth inning in an eventual 11-10 loss to the RiverHawks in the nightcap.

Matt Stalcup (2-0) limited NSU to a run and three hits in four innings of work in the opener. He walked three and fanned six batters. Ryan McKay and James Fitzgearlds combined on three no-hit innings of relief. Fitzgearlds recorded the final six outs to earn a save.

Brad Foss went 2-for-3 with a run scored and Luke Bordewick scored the eventual game-winning run on Austin Lastimado's sacrifice hit.

In game two, the RiverHawks held the Gorillas hitless through the first six frames, building a 9-0 lead before Pitt State finally pushed across four runs in the seventh. Pitt State added six more runs in the eighth inning to take a brief 10-9 lead.

The RiverHawks plated single runs in the eighth and the ninth innings to shut off the Gorillas comeback bid.

Pitt State collected just four hits in the night cap, but the Gorillas benefited from nine walks, a pair of hit batsmen and two NSU errors.

The Gorillas also committed four errors in the contest.

Pitt State will return to action Sunday (Mar. 3) when the Gorillas open a three-game MIAA weekend series against Nebraska-Kearney at Al Ortolani Field.
