PITTSBURG -- Pitt State, which twice left the bases loaded and stranded 12 runners in the game, broke through with key hits in the sixth and eighth innings to help the Gorillas claim a 5-2 victory over Southwest Baptist Saturday (Mar. 16).
The win helped the Gorillas (11-6, 8-5 MIAA) take the series against the Bearcats (7-10, 7-8 MIAA), who split a pair of games with Pitt State Friday.
Ryan Ventura singled home Jacoby Martin with the go-ahead run with one out in the sixth inning. Martin, who went 2-for-2 with a walk and two RBIs in the contest, singled to start the frame.
The Gorillas tacked on a pair of insurance runs in the 8th inning on a run-scoring double by Tory Stoffregen and Brad Foss' sacrifice fly.
James Fitzgearlds recorded the final six outs for his fifth save of the season, relieving Ryan McKay (3-1), who earned the win with one-plus innings of scoreless relief. Cody Wren two runs and five hits in 5 2/3 innings of work.
The Gorillas, who have played 13 of their first 16 games at Al Ortolani Field, begin a two-week road swing with a doubleheader at Emporia, Kan., against Emporia State Wednesday (Mar. 20).
