PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team plated a key insurance run in the eighth inning and held on for a 6-5 victory over Truman State University Saturday (Mar. 30) to complete the series sweep at Al Ortolani Field.
The Gorillas (17-10, 14-9 MIAA) rallied from a 3-2 deficit with three runs in the fifth inning against the Bulldogs (6-21, 6-20 MIAA). Pitt State posted 4-1 and 7-1 wins over Truman Friday.
Tory Stoffregen continued to swing a hot bat, going 3-for-4 with a triple and a pair of RBI. He tripled and scored the go-ahead run in the fifth on a relay throwing error on the play.
Jake Stevenson (2-2) scattered eight hits over seven innings to earn his second win of the season. He fanned five batters.
James Fitzgearlds recorded the final four outs for his team-leading sixth save.
The Gorillas will return to action Wednesday (Apr. 3) when they host Northeastern State University in an MIAA twinbill starting at 1 p.m. (CDT).
