PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State baseball team split a pair of MIAA games against Washburn Friday (Mar. 8) at Al Ortolani Field. The Gorillas claimed a 5-1 victory over the Ichabods in game one, before falling by an identical 5-1 score in the nightcap.

Pitt State (7-4, 5-4 MIAA) and Washburn (3-6, 3-6 MIAA) will complete the three-game series with a series deciding game Saturday at 11 a.m. (CST).

In the series opener, George Brandecker, Ryan McKay and James Fitzgearlds combined to limit WU to three hits.

The Gorillas broke open a 1-1 game with three runs in the fifth inning. Jacoby Martin singled home pinch runner Samuel Falcon with the go-ahead run in the frame. Ian Robinson tripled to open the frame. Ryan Ventura and Tory Stoffregen added run-scoring hits in the big inning.

McKay (1-1) allowed just one hit in 1 2/3 innings of relief to earn the win. Fitzgearlds earned his third save by getting the final six outs.

In game two, WU's Drew Ridley (1-1) and Mark Biesma (Sv, 1) combined to hold the Pitt State offense at bay, scattering six hits in the nine-inning contest. Parker Gibson went 3-for-5 with an RBI and David Gauntt drove in a pair of insurance runs for the Ichabods in the ninth inning.

Robinson went 3-for-3 for the Gorillas, collecting half of Pitt State's six hits as a team.
