JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. — The Pittsburg State University baseball team rode a pair of strong starting pitching performances to a doubleheader sweep of Lincoln University Saturday (Apr. 13). The Gorillas claimed 5-3 and 10-0 wins over the Blue Tigers.
In game one, Matt Stalcup (5-2) fanned 13 batters while coming an out away from a complete-game victory for the Gorillas (22-14, 18-12 MIAA). Ryan McKay got the final out, with a runner on base, to register his third save of the year.
Pitt State scored two runs in the second, one in the third and two more in the fourth inning to build a 5-0 lead before settling for the 5-3 victory.
Jacoby Martin paced the Gorillas offense, going 3-for-4 with two runs scored.
In the nightcap, Cody Wren (3-4) limited LU (4-26, 3-22 MIAA) to three hits in the seven-inning run-rule victory. Wren issued one walk and posted seven strikeouts.
Ryan Ventura went 4-for-4 with three RBI and four RBI, coming up a home run short of hitting for the cycle. Tory Stoffregen also went 2-for-5 with a triple and two RBI.
The two teams will wrap up the weekend series with a final game Sunday (Apr. 14) at 1 p.m. (CDT) at the LU Baseball Field.
