PITTSBURG – George Brandecker tossed a three-hit shutout in game one for Pittsburg State University, but Emporia State University used a four-run third inning in the nightcap to claim a 9-2 win and force a split in the twinbill.
 
Brandecker (4-3) recorded a career-high 10 strikeouts in a briskly-paced, 80-minute game.
 
The Gorillas scored a run in the first inning and added four more in the second to stake Brandecker to the five-run margin. Tory Stoffregen’s two-run single capped the big inning.
 
In the nightcap, ESU (25-16, 23-13 MIAA) plated four runs in the top of the third inning to overcame an early 2-1 deficit against the Gorillas (23-16, 19-14 MIAA).
 
Pitt State managed just three hits in the contest, none after the fourth inning.
 
The Gorillas will return to action Saturday when they travel to St. Charles, Mo., to open a three-game MIAA series against Lindenwood University.
