PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team built leads of 6-1 and 11-3 before settling for an 11-6 victory over Northwest Missouri State University Saturday (Apr. 27) in the opening game of a three-game series.
The two teams will meet at 1 p.m. (CDT) Sunday (Apr. 28) in a doubleheader at Al Ortolani Field to complete the series.
Luke Bordewick paced Pitt State's 14-hit attack going 3-for-5 with two runs scored and two RBI. Ryan Ventura, Cody Ball, Jacoby Martin and Austin Lastimado all had two hits for the Gorillas (25-20, 21-18 MIAA), while Ventura, Ryan Bilovesky, Brad Foss and Bordewick all drove in two runs.
Matt Stalcup (6-3) allowed three runs and seven hits in six innings of work. Four Pitt State relievers pitched behind Stalcup with Ryan McKay striking out three of the final four outs to nail down the win.
The Bearcats (21-26, 18-23) committed six errors in the contest, allowing Pitt State to plate nine unearned runs in the contest.
