PITTSBURG -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team split a pair of games on the final day of the regular season Sunday (Apr. 28). The Gorillas claimed a 5-3 victory over Northwest Missouri State University in game one, before dropping a 17-6 decision to the Bearcats in the nightcap.
Pitt State finishes the regular season 26-21 overall and 22-19 in the MIAA. The Gorillas finish eighth in the MIAA standings, but expect to be seeded seventh in the eight-team MIAA Postseason Tournament -- Lindenwood University is not eligible for post-season play.
The Bearcats wrap up their season with a 22-27 overall record and a 19-24 mark in MIAA play.
In game one, the Gorillas jumped out to a 3-0 lead then added a pair of insurance runs in the sixth after the Bearcats trimmed the margin to 3-2.
Cody Wren (4-5) allowed five hits and one earned run in 6 1/3 innings of work. Ryan McKay recorded the final two outs for his fourth save of the season.
Brad Foss went 2-for-3 with a double and two RBI for the Gorillas.
Northwest scored two or more runs in seven of nine innings, rapping out 23 hits in the contest.
Ryan Ventura paced the Gorillas 3-for-5 with a double, a triple and two runs scored.
