PITTSBURG — The Pittsburg State University baseball team will play host to Northeastern State University in an MIAA doubleheader Thursday (Apr. 4). First pitch is set for 2 p.m. (CDT) at Al Ortolani Field.

The Gorillas enter Thursday's action with a 17-10 overall record, including a14-9 mark in MIAA action. Pitt State has won five straight games to climb into fourth place in the conference standings. The RiverHawks have won three straight games to improve to 15-3 overall, 15-3 in MIAA play and eighth in the league standings.

Pitt State and NSU split a pair of games on Feb. 28 at Tahlequah, Okla. The Gorillas posted a 2-1 win that day, before falling 11-10 in the nightcap.

Pitt State junior outfielder Tory Stoffregen was named the MIAA Hitter of the Week Tuesday (Apr. 2). The Goddard, Kan., native batted .611 (11-for-18) last week with seven runs scored and 13 RBI. For the season, he leads the Gorillas with a .406 batting average, with team highs in runs scored (31), doubles (12) and stolen bases (12).

As a team, the Gorillas are batting .329 and scoring 7.5 runs per game. Pitt State's pitching staff has a 4.76 ERA.

Senior lefthander Matt Stalcup (3-2, 3.34 ERA) and senior righthander Eric Hanson (2-1, 5.48 ERA) are expected to start Thursday against the RiverHawks. Stalcup fanned a PSU record 15 batters, including the first nine of the game, in his last outing against Central Oklahoma on Mar. 26. He has struck out a league-leading 54 batters in 32 1/3 innings of work (15.0 K/9 IP).

NSU is batting .308 as a team and scoring 6.9 runs per game. The RiverHawks have a 6.27 ERA.

Senior righthander Trevor Walch was named the MIAA Pitcher of the Week Tuesday. Walch posted a victory and two saves in four relief appearances on the week. He allowed no runs and registered 17 strikeouts in 12 innings of work. Walch has posted a 2-2 record with a 5.74 ERA in 42 1/3 innings of work on the year.
