No. 12 Griffons Turn Back Gorillas Twice Saturday

PITTSBURG — No. 12 ranked Missouri Western State University twice jumped out to early leads en route to a pair of identical 12-5 victories over Pittsburg State University Saturday (Apr. 6) at Al Ortolani Field.

The two teams will wrap up their three-game MIAA series with a 1 p.m. (CDT) game Sunday (Apr. 7).

MWSU (27-4, 21-1 MIAA) capitalized on the long ball in its game one win over Pitt State (18-13, 15-12 MIAA). The Griffons belted six home runs as they exploded for four runs in the second and six more runs in the third inning. MWSU rapped out 18 hits overall in the contest.

The Griffons built a 12-0 lead in the contest before the Gorillas scored the game's final five runs over the final four innings.

Jacob Martin drove in a pair of runs for Pitt State, while Ryan Ventura went 2-for-4 with two runs scored.

In the nightcap, the Griffons belted four more home runs. MWSU built a 7-0 lead in the second inning, and, after the Gorillas closed the gap to 7-3, the Griffons tacked on two more runs in the seventh and three runs in the eighth to nail down the win.

For the Gorillas, Ian Robinson hit a solo home run among his two hits. Ventura and Tory Stoffregen both went 2-for-5. Ryan Bilovesky also belted his team-leading 10th home run of the season in the ninth inning.
