HAYS, Kan. — The Pittsburg State University baseball team upended seventh-ranked University of Central Missouri, 11-3, in the opening game of a best two-of-three series in the first round of the MIAA Tournament Saturday (May 4), but the Mules responded in kind with a 16-4 victory over the Gorillas in game two.

The two squads will complete the series at 1 p.m. (CDT) Sunday (May 5) with the winner advancing to the MIAA Final Four Series May 9-11 at Community America Ballpark in Kansas City, Kan.

Pitt State (27-22) broke open a 2-2 game in the series opener with a five-run fourth inning againt UCM (35-10). Ryan Ventura hit a two-run home run and Ryan Bilovesky added a two-run triple in the big inning.

Matt Stalcup (7-3) made the lead stand up for the Gorillas. He limited the Mules to six hits in seven innings of work, allowing three runs before turning the game over to the bullpen. Ryan McKay recorded the final six outs for Pitt State.

Brad Foss went 2-for-5 with three RBI, while Tory Stoffregen went 2-for-4 with an RBI and three runs scored.

In game two, Pitt State struck for four first-inning runs, but UCM countered with two runs in the first, two in the second and one in the third to take a 5-4 lead; and the Mules blew the game open with an 11-run fifth inning.

Andrew Urban (5-2) limited the Gorillas to four hits in 6 2/3 innings of relief, walking none and fanning six batters.

Kyle Grieshaber paced UCM's 18-hit attack, going 3-for-4 with two doubles and four RBI.
