PITTSBURG — Lizzy Jeronimus scored 11 points in overtime to help the Pittsburg State University women's basketball team pull away for an 83-73 victory over the University of Nebraska-Kearney Wednesday (Jan. 22).

Pitt State (12-6, 5-3 MIAA) trailed by three points, 66-63, with 2:08 to play in regulation, before rallying to knot the score against UNK (6-10, 3-7 MIAA).

Brigit Hesser pulled the Gorillas within a point, at 66-65, with 1:43 to play. After UNK's Laramey Lewis missed on a 3-pointer, Jeronimus was fouled on the defensive rebound with 1:18 to go. She made the second of two free throws to tie the game up, at 66-66.

Lewis would mis-fire on another 3-pointer and both squads traded turnovers in the game's final minute. The Gorillas came away with the ball and a chance to win the game in regulation, but Jeronimus missed on a jumper with four seconds to go.

Jeronimus put Pitt State ahead 14 seconds into the extra session and then converted a three-point play for a 71-66 lead at the 4:19 mark of the extra session.

Sarah Hix buried a 3-pointer for the Lopers to make it a 71-69 game, but the Gorillas stretched their cusion to 76-70 with 1:48 remaining in OT on baskets by Cathy Brugman and Jeronimus and a free throw by Alex Muff.

Hix made another trey to make it a 76-73 game, but Alexa Bordewick countered with a 3-pointer for the Gorillas to push the margin back to 79-73 with 24 seconds remaining. Jeronimus added a pair of free throws and a breakaway layup in the game's waning seconds.

Jeronimus led all scorers with 31 points. She made 10 of 23 shots from the field and 11 of 13 free throws, while adding seven rebounds in the contest. Brugman finished the game with 17 points and eight rebounds, while Hesser chipped in with 10 points. Muff led the Gorillas with nine rebounds.

Hix paced the Lopers with 28 points, including five of eight shooting from 3-point range. Amarah Williams added 11 points and a game-high nine rebounds for UNK.

The Gorillas will return to action Saturday (Jan. 25) when they play host to Fort Hays State University. Tipoff is set for 1:30 p.m. (CST) at John Lance Arena. The Tigers (12-3, 6-3 MIAA) host South Dakota Mines in a non-conference tilt Thursday (Jan. 23) before traveling to Pittsburg to face the Gorillas.
