Gorillas Earn Conference Road Win at Lincoln

JEFFERSON CITY, Mo. -- Despite Lincoln cutting a double-digit Gorilla lead to just four late in the second half, the Pitt State women's basketball team was able to hang on for a 76-64 win in Jason Gym on Monday (January 6) night.

Pitt State improves to 10-3 overall and 3-0 in MIAA play. Lincoln falls to 3-10 and 0-6 in the conference.

Lizzy Jeronimus led three Gorillas in double figures with 16 points. Cathy Brugman added a career-high 12 points, while Alex Muff scored 10. Jeronimus also lead the Gorillas with eight rebounds and four assists. She and Muff each blocked two shots.

Lincoln's Jennifer Rosado led all players with 19 points. Quiessence Price added 15 points, 13 in the second half, and Hunter Yoakum scored 10. 

The Gorillas led  42-27 at the half. Nine different players had scored by half time, with Brugman and Jeronimus leading with seven each.

Pitt State started the game with a 6-0 run and didn't allow Lincoln to score until the 17:36 mark and it was another 2:30 before the Blue Tigers would score again. The Gorillas were able to go up by double digits as they held Lincoln without a shot from the floor from 8:27 to 3:48, allowing the visiting team a 35-18 lead.

The Blue Tigers started the second half at a frantic pace and were able to cut the Pitt State lead to 10 twice early in the half, while grabbing several offensive rebounds and forcing a couple Gorilla turnovers. The Blue Tigers hung close and were able to make a big run at Pitt State late in the half, cutting the lead to four points with just under three minutes to go. The home team was greatly helped by 11 offensive rebounds in the second half.

The Gorillas were able to make some plays and stretch the lead back out with crucial baskets from Antqunita Reed and Jeronimus and good free throw shooting by Jeronimus and Brigit Hesser.

Pitt State returns home for two more conference games this week as the Gorillas take on No. 8 Central Missouri on Thursday at 5:30 p.m. and MIssouri Western on Saturday at 1:30 p.m.
