Gorillas Take No. 21 Jennies to Five

PITTSBURG, Kan. -- The Pittsburg State Volleyball team (7-14, 4-9 MIAA) had a tremendous blocking day, as the team took No. 21 Central Missouri (14-7, 11-2 MIAA) to five sets on Saturday afternoon in John Lance Arena.

The Gorillas outblocked the Jennies 15.0 to 4.0. Seven of the team's blocks came in the third set alone. Madi Mosier led the Gorillas with seven total blocks (three solo, four assisted). Paula Okrutna added six blocks (four solo, two assisted). Ary Crittleton added four blocks, while Hayley Hansford added three.

Mosier also led Pitt State in kills with 14 and added 10 blocks for a double-double. Ary Crittleton added 11 kills, while Maggie Highberger was just under double figures with nine kills. Ashlen Schwartz recorded 27 digs in the match to lead all players.

Pitt State lost the first two sets 25-13 and 25-12, but a came out with a different attitude for the third set. The Gorillas led early in the set until Central Missouri was able to tie the set at 16-16 and took the lead on a service ace at 17-16. Pitt State continued to fight and three straight UCM attack errors and a Hayley Hansford service ace gave Pitt State at 22-18 lead. The Gorillas held on tight for the 25-21 win.

Set four saw a lot more back-and-forth between the two teams with 14 ties and five lead changes. Pitt State took a 23-22 lead on a kill by Maggie Highberger. A Gorilla error tied the set for the final time. Highberger added another kill to go up 24-23 and force the set point. A Central Missouri hitting error finished the fourth set with the 25-23 win for the home team.

Set five was also a battle. Central Missouri hit eight first, leading 8-6. Pitt State came back to tie the set at 9-9. The Jennies went up by two again, but a Schwartz service ace and a Mosier kill gave pitt State a 12-11 lead. The Jennies scored three straight to make it 14-12 and match point, but kills by Mosier and Okrutna tied the set once more at 14-14. Central Missouri would get the final two points, however, for the 16-14 win.

Pitt State takes a long road trip next week, as the team heads west to Nebraska-Kearney and Fort Hays State.
