Women's Basketball Earns 31-Point Regional Win

MARYVILLE, Mo. -- The PIttsburg State women's basketball team improved to 4-0 on the season with an 81-50 win over regional opponent Minnesota-Duluth on Friday (Nov. 21) in game one of the Winstead-Reeves Classic at Bearcat Arena.

Four Gorillas scored in double figures, led by Cathy Brugman with 23 points. Kylie Gafford added 17, Lizzy Jeronimus, 15, and Morgan Westhoff camce off the bench to add 10. Jeronimus led the team on the boards with eight rebounds. She also dished out a team-high four assists. Gafford added two blocks.

Pitt State committed only 11 fouls in the game, allowing the Bulldogs to shoot only eight free throws, making six. Meanwhile, the Gorillas went to the line 22 times and scored 16 points from the charity stripe. PSU shot .518 from the floor for the game and .389 from long range. The Bulldogs were held to just .317 overall and .167 from three-point range.

The Gorillas set the tone early in the game and never looked back. Pitt State scored the first five points of the game and had a double digit lead, 14-4, with 12:39 to go in the first half. The Bulldogs did not hit double digits until the 7:48 mark making the score 28-11 in favor of Pitt State. A Gafford layup with 7:09 to go gave Pitt State its first 20-point lead of the game. By the half, Pitt State led 45-19. The Gorillas shot a whopping 58 percent from the floor in the first half.

Minnesota-Duluth scored a bit easier in the second half, but Pitt State continued its relentless attack. The team took its first 30-point lead just shortly into the second half on Gafford free throw. The Bulldogs came back some, but were never closer than 22 points.

Pitt State will play their second game in the tournament on Saturday at 2 p.m. against William Jewell.
