OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team dropped a 9-4 decision to Oklahoma Christian University in the season opener for both schools.
The Gorillas (0-1) fell behind early against the Eagles (1-0) and Pitt State couldn't catch up to OCU in the end.
The Eagles jumped in front 1-0 in the first inning then tacked on a three-run third inning for a 4-0 lead against Pitt State starter Tyler Thompson.
Brad Foss singled home Derek Hackney in the top of the fourth to trim the margin to 4-1, but the Eagles countered with two more runs in the bottom of the frame.
OCU added three more runs in the seventh for a 9-1 advantage, before Pitt State plated three runs in the top of the eighth for the final margin. Aaron Bucher and Hackey had RBI groundouts in the frame and Cody Ball scored a third run on a wild pitch.
The Gorillas and Eagles will return to action Saturday (Feb. 15) to complete the three-game series with a 2 p.m. (CST) doubleheader.
