OKLAHOMA CITY -- The Pittsburg State University baseball team split a doubleheader against Oklahoma Christian University Saturday (Feb. 15) in games played at Putman City High School.

The Gorillas (1-2) were victimized by eight fielding errors in an 8-1 loss in game one. Pitt State countered with a strong pitching performance by junior righthander Nate Arnold and timely hits by the offense in the nightcap as the Gorillas posted a 12-2 run-rule victory over the Eagles (2-1).

Arnold (1-0), a Pittsburg native making his Pitt State debut Saturday, retired the first 15 batters he faced, taking a perfect game into the sixth inning. By that time, Kyle Dickens slugged a grandslam and the Gorillas had staked Arnold to a 7-0 lead.

Arnold allowed a pair of runs in the sixth and gave way to reliever Aaron Snow in the seventh. He allowed just two hits and fanned seven batters in the contest.

The Gorillas tacked on five more runs in the seventh to shorten the game and force the seven-inning run-rule. Cody Ball, who drove in four runs in the contest, had a two-run double as part of Pitt State's big seventh inning.

Ball and Dickens both went 2-for-3 in the contest as well as Evan Thomas, who also scored a team-leading three runs.

In game one, the Eagles plated two runs in the bottom of the first and never looked back. OC outhit Pitt State, 12-4, but the Eagles scored just two earned runs thanks to the plethora of Gorillas defensive miscues.

Luke Bordewick singled home Dickens for Pitt State's only run in the top of the fifth inning.

The Gorillas will open MIAA play Feb. 21-23 when they travel to Hays, Kan., to face Fort Hays State University in a four-game series.
