HAYS, Kan. — The Pittsburg State University baseball team fell in its MIAA opener to Fort Hays State University, 6-3, at Larks Park Friday (Feb. 21).
The Gorillas (1-4) fell behind early against the Tigers (2-2, 1-0 MIAA) after a solo home run by Clayton Garland in the third inning. PSU answered in the top of the fifth with a three-run homer by Tory Stoffregen to give the Gorillas a 3-1 advantage.
The lead would be short lived however as Fort Hays State tallied four runs in the bottom of the fifth, highlighted by a Kodie Fewin solo homer. Fewin added another solo shot in the sixth inning to bring the final score to 6-3.
Offensively, Nate Arnold finished 3-for-4 for the Gorillas with a run scored. Tyler Thompson (0-2) gave up six earned runs in 5.7 innings of work. The senior right-hander notched three strikeouts and two walks in the contest.
Pitt State and Fort Hays State will return to action Saturday (Feb. 22) to continue the four-game series with a 1 p.m. (CST) doubleheader.
